Our Mission Statement ‘We learn together in God's love by encouraging and supporting one another’ was chosen by the children to reflect the journey each individual makes as they grow spiritually and academically during their career at St Edmunds. The curriculum is designed to reflect our philosophy that every child is a unique gift from God with their own talents, interests and needs.
We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which is planned and delivered in accordance with the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014 for years 1 to 6 and the Foundation Stage Curriculum for Early Years.
At St Edmund’s we believe learning is as much about attitudes as knowledge and skills. We explicitly teach the children about the characteristics of successful learning as part of the curriculum. This helps the children develop as ambitious, independent learners who are able to take responsibility for their learning and communicate their knowledge and ideas confidently and articulately to peers and adults alike. An investigative approach is used to organise the subject specific content the children will be taught, with year groups working closely together to provide a consistent, motivating experience for all. An overview of the curriculum which is delivered in each year group is available below. We make use of the school's extensive grounds to offer a Forest School programme for children in Early Years, Year 1 and 2. They spend half a day each week in the purpose built, dedicated outdoor learning area with a qualified Forest School teacher. Other year groups have the opportunity to use the outdoor learning area during the annual Forest School Enrichment week. More information about the programme can be found here.
The curriculum at St Edmund’s is a feast for learning and so we regularly make use of enrichment weeks to motivate and engage the children. In the Spring term there is a book week when visiting authors may work with children to create their own books which are then put into the school library for everyone to share. We also celebrate St Edmund’s week by learning more about our Faith and patron saint as well as with a whole school project. Other enrichment weeks take place over the course of the year reflecting the suggestions of staff, pupils and parents.
We are proud of the tradition of academic success enjoyed by the children of St Edmund’s. The teaching of reading, writing and maths are at the heart of our curriculum. Children will experience aspects of these subjects every day.
In Early Years and key stage one pupils are introduced to early reading skills through the use of regular whole class and small group reading sessions. The school uses ‘Letters and Sounds’ and THRASS to support the teaching of phonics and decoding skills. Children take home graded reading materials from the start of reception along with high quality real books by well-known authors. A passion for reading a wide range of texts and poetry is encouraged for all children. Children read regularly to an adult in school and information is recorded in their home-school diaries so parents know how their child is progressing and areas to practise at home.
As children progress through key stage one they become more independent in their reading but are still supported by graded books alongside self-chosen books from the school library. Regular ‘reading for pleasure sessions’ take place in class and older pupils act as reading rangers to younger children. This means they get used to reading with a wider range of adults and peers and can practise their skills often.
By the time the children reach key stage two the majority are fluent and confident readers. They choose their own books from the class library and school library supported by teaching staff. The online system allows staff to monitor children’s reading habits and ensure they are introduced to a range of authors and text types. Children in key stage two who still need the support of a graded scheme are provided with age appropriate texts with a controlled vocabulary to encourage progress.
Regular assessment allows staff to identify pupils who need additional teaching quickly. The school provides a range of interventions for pupils who need additional reading support. Parents are involved in these programmes and more information can be found here.
Each year the whole school participates in a ‘Book Week’ which involves visiting authors; opportunities to visit books shops and the library and a dress up book character day.
We are keen to encourage the children to continue learning at home and so every child is able to access online learning programmes such as Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars. More details about supporting learning at home can be found in this section.
However we also recognise the importance of other areas of learning. As a Catholic school the practice of, and learning about, our faith is part of our daily life. While we emphasise the Christian tradition in all aspects of school life, we encourage and respect an appreciation of other faiths and cultures. Every member of our community is valued as an equal member of God’s family. Through the curriculum, the children are given the knowledge and understanding to live in our multicultural society. In key stage 2 children are taught RE by the subject leader each week. Every child has the opportunity to learn to play the violin as part of the curriculum in year 3 taught by a specialist teacher. French is taught by a specialist teacher in key stage 2. There are many extra-curricular activities provided during lunchtimes and after school which enhance children’s learning.
